Florida Tops the Nation in International Tourism as Figures Show Continued Growth

International tourism in Florida has continued to grow faster than in other parts of the United States, according to data released by Visit Florida officials. Despite the impact of global inflation, lengthy visa-processing times, and COVID-19 vaccine mandates, the state saw an estimated 2 million overseas visitors during the final quarter of 2022.

This marks the highest quarterly figure since the last three months of 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic hit the state's economy and tourism industry. The total number of overseas visitors to Florida in 2022 was approximately 7.02 million, up 73% from the previous year but still 28% below the 9.801 million in 2019.

Florida's tourism industry had a significant economic impact in 2021, with a total of $101.9 billion, exceeding the $96.4 billion in 2019. The numbers are expected to be even more impressive in 2022, as the state continues to outperform the rest of the nation in international travel, drawing 44.6% of the market share.

In comparison, New York, which was once the top destination for international travelers, attracted only 22% of the market. Florida's success in international tourism is a result of the state's focus on maintaining its upward trajectory and not taking its foot off the gas.

Governor Ron DeSantis has proposed a state budget for 2023-2024 that seeks to double the funding for Visit Florida, to $100 million, to support the continued growth of the state's tourism industry. Despite increasing competition from other global destinations, Florida remains a popular destination for international travelers, who are drawn to the state's strategic advantages and open environment.
