LEGOLAND Resorts, operated by Merlin Entertainment, have announced their commitment to becoming certified autism centers by spring 2023, as confirmed by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES). In addition to the main LEGOLAND parks, three onsite hotels at LEGOLAND Florida, and Peppa Pig Theme Park located just steps away, will also be certified autism centers.
Families visiting LEGOLAND Resorts can expect a range of accommodations to better assist guests with autism and other sensory sensitivities. Trained front-line team members will be equipped to assist with any needs, and pre-planning resources will be available on the resorts' websites. Sensory guides developed by IBCCES will provide information about bright lights, loud sounds, and other features that guests may need to plan around. The guides will also rate each attraction's sensory levels in terms of touch, taste, sound, sight, and smell, making it easier for families to plan activities that align with their needs and accommodations. The park map will be marked with low-traffic areas for visitors who need a low-sensory break.
Low-sensory areas will also be available for guests to take a break and relax in a less stimulating environment. LEGOLAND Florida and LEGOLAND New York will offer quiet rooms dedicated to children with varying sensory needs, equipped with weighted blankets, dim lighting, and tactile toys. First Aid will also offer earplugs to assist with sound and overstimulation, and "Assisted Access Passes" can be requested at Guest Services.
To become certified, the resorts will undergo evidence-based training from IBCCES and incorporate the perspectives of autistic individuals. IBCCES will provide ongoing resources, including onsite reviews and custom recommendations, to ensure LEGOLAND Resorts have the tools and support necessary to make a lasting impact for all guests.
"LEGOLAND Resorts are designed to inspire creativity among children of all abilities, fostering imagination and a sense of belonging through our rides, experiences, and entertainment," said Scott O'Neil, CEO of Merlin Entertainments. "With 1 in 44 children diagnosed with autism in the U.S., we want to build understanding and empathy while also ensuring our teams have the necessary tools and support strategies when engaging with a neurodiverse population. Through this certification, we're providing our guests with more opportunities to create and play their way, while supporting parents through every step of the vacation planning journey."
